28 Apr Conference seeks to improve education in MS
Jackson, MS – Improving public education is a major issue in Mississippi, and some residents are working this weekend to do just that.
Students, school administrators and education advocates from all over the state attended the Opportunity to Learn Conference in Jackson.
Some of the topics discussed include the importance of hiring quality teachers, parental involvement in their child’s school work and the need for more funding.
“We have to prioritize it as a state,” says Kimberly Merchant from the Mississippi Center for Justice. “And the fact that the legislature continues to under-fund education shows it’s not a priority for them. So, until we make education priority, we’ll continue to have these issues.”
Conference organizers plan to put all of ideas discussed at this weekend’s conference into a report — in hopes of moving forward with addressing the issues.
