Statement from the Mississippi Center for Justice (MCJ) on the Cancellation of the Special Session to Redraw Voting Maps

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MISSISSIPPI – May 13, 2026 – Mississippians made it clear: efforts to weaken Black voices will not go unchallenged.

Governor Tate Reeves’ decision to cancel the scheduled Special Session to redraw maps that would dilute the Black vote reflects the power of communities coming together, speaking clearly, and refusing to be ignored.

The Callais decision is a reminder that the fight for fair representation is never abstract in Mississippi. When protections for voting rights are weakened, the question becomes who still gets heard, who still gets seen, and who gets written out of democracy. In the face of that reality, Mississippians across the state organized—meeting in churches, gathering in community spaces, and connecting virtually—to ensure their voices would not be silenced.

That collective action mattered.

But this moment is not the end. The challenges to fair representation remain, and we are ready for the 2027 legislative session. The Mississippi Center for Justice will continue to oppose any efforts to redraw district lines in a way that weakens Black representation and diminishes the political power of our communities.

On May 20, we will still rally because this is about more than a single session. It is about making clear, now and moving forward, that Mississippians are organized, engaged, and prepared to defend their right to fair representation. As members of the Voting Rights Act Rapid Response Coalition, the MCJ stands in solidarity with all those who have worked tirelessly to mobilize communities across the State.

We will continue this work in our communities, in the courts, and wherever our voices are needed until every Mississippian is seen, heard, and represented.
