Housing stability is at the heart of our mission to ensure every Mississippian has a safe and secure place to call home. In 2022, Mississippi’s landlord-tenant laws changed significantly, providing new protections for tenants. Under the current statute, tenants now have at least seven days after an eviction court hearing to vacate their home, unless the court finds a shorter or longer time is justified. Tenants can also request additional time from the court if needed. For evictions based solely on non-payment of rent, tenants have the right to stop the eviction by paying all owed rent in full before the court-ordered move-out date.
We know that understanding these rights can be the difference between stability and crisis. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched Mississippi’s only eviction hotline to answer tenants’ urgent questions about the eviction process and their rights under the law. Today, our hotline has expanded to provide comprehensive housing stability support.
We believe that no one should face the threat of losing their home alone. Our housing stability work empowers tenants with knowledge, tools, and representation to protect their homes and build stronger, more resilient communities.
How We Help
Through our housing stability hotline, we help tenants across the state navigate issues such as requesting continuances in justice court, negotiating payment plans with landlords, understanding eviction notices, requesting maintenance repairs, initiating repair and deduct processes, or preparing letters for early lease termination.
For community members in Harrison, Jackson, and Hancock counties, our attorneys may also provide direct legal representation for eviction defense and related housing stability matters.
