We are committed to protecting and preserving the property rights of landowners in Mississippi and building generational wealth for Black families.  Some families have inherited land that’s been passed down informally from generation-to-generation without a will.  This land – legally known as heirs’ property – is owned by all the heirs, regardless of whether they live on the land, pay the taxes, or have ever set foot on the land.  Individual heirs cannot get loans to improve the property, and they cannot lease the land without the consent of all heirs, many of whom are unknown.  As a result, once-cherished family land, which should be a source of family wealth, is lost or deemed worthless. 

Since Hurricane Katrina, we have been assisting Mississippians with heirs’ property issues, enabling property owners to get maximum use out of their land. Our Heirs’ Property Campaign has flourished and now provides free legal services and outreach to assist landowners in keeping, protecting, and utilizing their land for generations to come.
