Mississippi is one of only ten states that has not expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. As a result, nearly 200,000 Mississippians fall into the “coverage gap” – earning too much to qualify for traditional Medicaid but not enough to afford private insurance. This gap disproportionately affects working families, rural residents, and people of color, leaving them without access to basic preventive care, treatment for chronic illnesses, and life-saving services. The lack of Medicaid expansion also places significant financial strain on our hospitals, leading to rural hospital closures that further limit access to care across the state.
We are working to change this by advocating for Medicaid expansion through policy analysis, coalition building, and public education campaigns. We inform lawmakers about the human and economic benefits of expansion, mobilize communities to raise their voices for healthcare access, and partner with other organizations to build a powerful movement for change. Expanding Medicaid is not only a moral imperative but an economic one, creating healthier communities and strengthening our state’s healthcare system for everyone.
