What This Means for Mississippi Voters
Mississippi’s new SHIELD Act takes effect today, creating additional voter citizenship verification requirements for some registered voters and new voter registration applicants.
While supporters say the law is intended to strengthen election administration, advocates have raised concerns that eligible voters could face new barriers if citizenship records cannot be readily verified through government databases. In some cases, voters may be asked to provide additional documentation, such as a birth certificate, passport, or naturalization papers, to confirm their eligibility.
What Does This Mean for Mississippi Voters?
Most voters will likely see no immediate changes. However, if voter registration records cannot be matched with available government records, some individuals may receive a notice requesting additional proof of citizenship.
Certain groups, including older adults, low-income residents, incarcerated individuals, naturalized citizens, and individuals without easy access to personal records, could face challenges if asked to provide documentation.
What Is the Mississippi Center for Justice (MCJ) Doing?
MCJ is closely monitoring implementation of the SHIELD Act and working with partners across the state to ensure that eligible voters are not wrongly removed from the voter rolls or denied access to the ballot.

- If a voter receives a notice requesting documentation or experiences voter registration issues, seek assistance immediately.
