TAKE A STAND at Mississippi on the Potomac

We are thrilled to unite donors, advocates, and supporters in Washington, D.C., for the Mississippi Center for Justice’s (MCJ) annual signature reception, Mississippi on the Potomac (MOTP). This will be a powerful evening of solidarity and action in the ongoing fight for a more just nation. MOTP specifically benefits MCJ’s work to advance racial and economic justice.

Join us on June 3 at The Observatory at America’s Square as we honor Attorney Vanita Gupta, former U.S. Associate Attorney General and a longtime civil rights champion who has advanced voting rights, justice reform, and civil rights enforcement nationwide.

Our theme this year is TAKE A STAND, which celebrates the courage and conviction of people who refuse to remain silent in the face of injustice. Attorney Gupta is one of those who has stepped forward, defended what is right, and helped build a nation where everyone can live with dignity, safety, and opportunity.

Honoring

Vanita Gupta

19th Associate Attorney General
of the United States 2021-2024

Vanita Gupta is the founder and director of the Center for Law and Public Trust and adjunct faculty at NYU Law. She is also the founder and director of Nonprofits Together, which strengthens the resilience of nonprofit organizations so they can remain mission-focused in defense of the rule of law and vulnerable communities, and stand strong together in defense of civil society.

Gupta served as the 19th Associate Attorney General of the United States from 2021–2024, overseeing thirteen DOJ components, including its civil litigation and grantmaking divisions, and led initiatives on police-community trust, reproductive rights, environmental justice, mental health, and gun violence prevention. Previously, she was President and CEO of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, the nation’s oldest and largest coalition of national, nonpartisan civil rights organizations. There she led national campaigns on voting rights, justice reform, and the 2020 census.

Gupta led the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division during the Obama administration, investigating police misconduct and litigating landmark LGBTQ and voting rights cases. Earlier, she was Deputy Legal Director at the American Civil Liberties Union

and an Assistant Counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, where she secured historic mass exonerations in Tulia, Texas, after challenging dozens of wrongful convictions.

Gupta has appeared extensively in the media, including as author of op-eds published in The New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today. She is the recipient of dozens of awards for her work, including being recognized by Politico Magazine as one of “50 Thinkers Transforming Politics.” She is a magna cum laude graduate of Yale College and NYU Law.
