Heirs’ Property: What It Is and How to Protect It

Heirs’ property is land that is inherited without a will or legal documentation of ownership, making
it difficult for the heirs to obtain a clear title. This can make it difficult for families to sell, mortgage,
or obtain loans on the property.
The Mississippi Center for Justice (MCJ) helps families in Mississippi with Heirs’ Property by
providing legal assistance to families to clear title to their land in heirship situations, establishing
current ownership to property, and educating communities around the state on the topic
